A Chaminé Algarvia: Portimão

“ Quantos dias quer de chaminé ? ”

O mestre pedreiro algarvio costumava fazer esta pergunta ao proprietário da casa para a qual iria construir a chaminé. Com efeito, o preço da chaminé, um dos símbolos da região algarvia, calculava-se pelo tempo que ela demorava a erguer. Quanto mais específico e elaborado era o seu desenho, mais cara se tornava. Eram as chaminés da vaidade do proprietário. É por isso que as chaminés algarvias têm as formas mais diversas. Há-as de todos os modelos e para todos os gostos só tendo como limite a imaginação de quem as faz.

Muitas vezes passamos por elas sem as ver mas, se estivermos minimamente atentos, elas surgirão aos nossos olhos, em casas antigas ou modernas, numa multiplicidade e beleza que vale a pena registar.

Cilíndricas ou prismáticas, quadradas ou rectangulares, simples ou elaboradas, as chaminés algarvias são um símbolo da região e uma prova da influência de cinco séculos de ocupação árabe.

Um legado arquitectónico e ornamental presente em grande parte das cidades e vilas do sul de Portugal e visível nas ruas estreitas, na estrutura das casas e no ar de minaretes das chaminés que adornam os telhados.

E no Algarve não havia duas chaminés iguais, porque os mais ou menos elaborados motivos decorativos dependiam sempre dos dias de construção, do prestígio, da vaidade e das posses do proprietário.

Aliás, era costume entre os mestres pedreiros perguntar quantos dias queriam de chaminé para avaliar o valor da chaminé a construir, que se traduzia no tempo que a mesma demorava a erigir.

Quanto mais delicada e difícil era a sua elaboração, mais dispendiosa se tornava.

A cor predominante era o branco da cal, mas honrosas excepções mostram ainda hoje alguns motivos coloridos, sobretudo em tons ocres e azuis.

Esta é uma das principais razões por que as chaminés algarvias ostentam as mais variadas formas, desde as simples ranhuras, aos complicados e belos rendilhados, ou à representação em miniatura de torres de relógio ou de casas. Mas sempre um símbolo visível da arte popular, uma prova de perícia para cada pedreiro e um motivo de orgulho para qualquer proprietário.

Mais do que pura utilidade, as chaminés algarvias desempenhavam um papel ornamental, sendo prova disso a presença de duas chaminés nas casas de campo, numa região em que as condições climatéricas pouco o justificam.

A chaminé de uso e também a mais simples e mais funcional ficava situada na casa do forno, onde era costume fazer as refeições, enquanto a chaminé rendilhada, mais pequena e personificada, ocupava um lugar de destaque na cozinha da própria casa, compartimento apenas utilizado para receber visitas ou organizar festas.

Em termos práticos, a chaminé era considerada um sinal de presença de pessoas nas casas, um bom indício do estado do tempo e o local onde era marcada a data de construção da casa.

O interior do Algarve, especialmente Querença, Martinlongo e Monchique são os locais onde melhor se podem contemplar estas seculares chaminés algarvias, uma arte de formas geométricas e rendilhados diversos, rematada a cal, que simboliza o prestígio e a vaidade dos proprietários.

Chimneys of the Algarve

Cylindrical or prismatic, square or rectangular, simple or elaborate, the chimneys of the Algarve are one of its great symbols, providing clear evidence of the influence of the region’s five centuries of occupation by the Moors.

An architectural and ornamental legacy that is to be found in most of the towns and cities of southern Portugal and is clearly visible in the layout of their narrow streets, in the structure of the houses and in the minaret-like appearance of the chimneys that adorn the rooftops.

And, in the Algarve, no two chimneys were ever built alike, because the greater or lesser intricacy of the decorative motifs always depended on the time when they were built, as well as the prestige, vanity and wealth of their owners. In fact, it was customary for the builders to ask how many days the owners wanted their chimneys to last, so that they could calculate the value of the chimney they were about to put up, which was based on the time that this would take to build.

The more intricate its decoration was and the more difficult it was to build, the more expensive it would be.

The predominant colour was the white of the limewash with which it was coated, but one or two honourable exceptions still display some coloured patterns even today, most notably in ochre and blue tones.

This is one of the main reasons why the chimneys of the Algarve have such a variety of shapes and decorations, ranging from simple grooves to more complicated and beautiful lacework patterns, or the miniature representation of clock towers or houses. But they always clearly display the symbolism of popular art, testifying to the expertise of each mason and representing a source of pride for any home owner.

Rather than being merely utilitarian objects, the chimneys of the Algarve fulfilled a decorative role, the proof of this being the fact that country houses generally had two chimneys, in a region where the climatic conditions could barely justify this.

The chimney that was actually used, and also the simpler and more functional of the two, was situated in the outhouse where the oven was installed and where meals were usually prepared, whilst the other chimney, usually with a lacework pattern, smaller and more personalised, occupied a prominent position in the kitchen of the house itself, a room that was only used for welcoming guests or organising parties and social occasions.

In practical terms, the chimney was considered a sign that there were people living in the house, giving a good indication of the state of the weather and being the place where the date of the house’s construction was normally marked.

Away from the coast, Querença, Martinlongo and Monchique in particular are the places where these centuries-old chimneys of the Algarve can best be appreciated, displaying an art form of different geometrical shapes and lacework patterns, all of them limewashed and serving as a symbol of the prestige and vanity of the owners.
